Madras Pioneer: MHS soccer field dedicated
Madras High School dedicated its new soccer facilities Wednesday, Sept. 14 with free snow cones, hot dogs and inspired guest speakers.
The event included a ribbon cutting, with the honors done by current MHS soccer captains. It honored the project paid for as part of the 2021 $24 million 509J school bond and included a new sod field, lighting, bathrooms, locker rooms and a concession stand.
Among the speakers were 509J superintendent Jay Mathisen and school board member Laurie Danzuka. Also featured were speakers Erika Oliveras and Imer Gutierrez, two MHS graduates who gave moving messages about the importance of soccer to them personally, to the student athletes and to the school and community. Both had coached middle-school-aged soccer teams based in Madras over the summer that had won championships.
